If you’re transitioning from Windows to Linux for the first time, you might find immutable systems to be slightly complex. However, adopting an immutable OS offers numerous benefits with little additional learning required, and there are various distributions designed to facilitate this transition.

NixOS

The pioneering distribution in immutability

NixOS, which has been around for over 20 years, stands out as one of the most recognized distributions that is entirely immutable. It evolved from a package manager, Nix, which was introduced in 2003, eventually developing into a full distribution.

The Nix package manager utilizes a unique language to define software characteristics, including origins, dependencies, and compilation options. This system enables users to configure their entire setup using just one file, which can later be employed to rebuild the system completely.

Despite its complexities, NixOS remains user-friendly. Installation follows the familiar process of booting from media, and its graphical ISO provides a step-by-step wizard for setup, similar to many contemporary distributions.

Fedora Atomic

Initially launched in 2014, Fedora Atomic was designed to manage server and container operations. It now also supports desktop environments, including variants like Silverblue for GNOME and Kinoite for KDE Plasma, as well as offerings for Sway, Budgie, and COSMIC.

The distribution employs rpm-ostree, a method that merges the advantages of image-based and package-based updates. This means the OS updates fully as an image but allows for additional RPM packages to be layered on top. Users need to reboot after updates to access the new image.

Fedora Atomic also supports application installations through Flatpaks, which are the recommended option for most graphical applications. They enhance security through sandboxing and help to prevent dependency conflicts. The ability of Atomic’s package layering to roll back updates means users can revert to previous stable versions if needed.

Bazzite includes rollback features and maintains images in repositories for 90 days, making it easy for users to assess new updates. It also supports Steam games through Valve’s Proton compatibility layer.

The robust immutable core uses OSTree for managing applications installed via Flatpak, ensuring system stability through controlled package updates. Furthermore, Endless OS does not require a recovery partition, which conserves disk space.

openSUSE MicroOS
