Discord Acknowledges AI Moderation Glitch Wrongfully Targeted Users for Innocuous Images

Discord has admitted that a glitch in its AI moderation system led to the wrongful banning of over 8,000 users in the last two months. Harmless visuals, including spreadsheets, chessboards, and game textures, were mistakenly identified as harmful content.
The company reported that this issue began in May, with around 200 users receiving bans over the weekend prior to the system being fixed. Currently, efforts are underway to restore the affected accounts.
This incident underscores the growing challenges of AI-driven moderation as numerous platforms rely on automated systems to detect inappropriate content at scale.
In a recent update, Discord explained that its automated safety system operates by comparing uploaded content to known harmful material databases. Though designed to catch illegal content, the company acknowledged that false positives can occur. While a human moderator usually reviews flagged content, a bug in the system led to immediate bans for affected accounts.
“We’re implementing improved safeguards to prevent this from happening again,” the company stated.
Our systems flag content by matching it against known harmful material. This kind of similarity matching can produce false positives, which is why a member of our Trust & Safety team always reviews flagged content before any action is taken.

Users on various platforms, including X and Reddit, have reported being permanently banned simply for uploading images with grid patterns. Some users speculated that Discord’s AI moderation tools might have become overly sensitive to such patterns, which have previously been used to obscure inappropriate content from automated detection.
Frustrated users have taken to social media to voice their concerns, arguing that permanent bans based solely on automated decisions can lead to severe consequences, particularly for those who use Discord for work, gaming, or social interaction.
“Losing a Discord account because of something so unjust can be profoundly damaging. Millions face unfair AI bans daily, and this must be addressed,” remarked one user on X.
My account was wrongfully banned from your platform due to a bug in your AI automod detecting my GAME TEXTURES as CSAM. I need my account back as I’m a game director and use Discord for all my communication. I have requested a review of my suspension.@discord @discord_support pic.twitter.com/QfAkCIJo6S

Discord is not the only platform grappling with challenges from automated moderation. Last year, users on Instagram and Facebook Groups reported sudden, unexplained account suspensions believed to be due to AI moderation. While users pointed towards automation as the likely cause, Meta has not publicly confirmed any AI-related errors. The company’s Oversight Board is now advocating for greater transparency.
Additionally, Tumblr faced similar complaints last year when users alleged that their accounts had been suspended en masse without clear explanations.
