Coinbase Unveils Innovative Tool for Agents to Trade and Access Premium Research Insights

With artificial intelligence agent traffic overtaking human activity online, businesses in the commerce and finance sectors are rapidly creating tools for these agents to act on users’ behalf. Following Robinhood’s release of trading agents, Coinbase has also unveiled its own AI agents that can facilitate trading and obtain premium research.

On Thursday, Coinbase announced that users can link the agent to their main account for trading activities. Alternatively, users have the option to run the agent in a distinct sandbox environment if they prefer not to grant it access to their primary account.

The company highlighted that the agent can utilize features from Coinbase Advanced, which is tailored for professional traders and offers additional functionalities, including TradingView charts for trade analysis and execution. Users may instruct the agent to rebalance their portfolios, adhere to specific investment strategies while trading on their behalf, or obtain one-time trading advice.

Currently, the agent is equipped to conduct trades in cryptocurrency spot markets and derivatives, with plans to support equities and prediction markets in the future. Coinbase noted that custom limitations will soon be introduced, allowing users to specify maximum trade sizes, the services the agent can engage with, and spending caps.

Coinbase is leveraging the open x402 payment protocol, which it developed in partnership with AWS, Anthropic, Circle, and Near last year. This protocol enables the agent to purchase premium research data and on-demand computing for trading insights without necessitating a login or subscription. A dedicated site outlines services accessible to the agent via the x402 protocol.

The trading platform has been investing in AI technologies over the past few years. In 2024, it released AgentKit, allowing developers to integrate automated wallets into their applications. Additionally, in December, it introduced an AI-driven assistant within the app to offer trading advice and financial support. The recent agent launch is also compatible with ChatGPT or Claude through Coinbase’s MCP server.

“Coinbase for Agents is built on the knowledge gained from years of developing the agentic economy, with a key goal of creating agents that can execute transactions. Unlike other trading platforms, we uniquely combine exchange access with a native payment protocol. Our vision is to create a fundamentally new offering for a future where agents predominantly navigate the online landscape,” stated Lincoln Murr, Head of AI Product.

The sector is witnessing swift advancements in agentic payments through various partnerships. Last month, Visa invested in Replit to enhance agentic payment capabilities for developers. Additionally, this week, it struck a deal with OpenAI to investigate similar products. This rapid progress has caught the attention of global financial regulators, prompting the Financial Stability Board to call for robust safeguards to address potential AI risks.
