Beware, Amazon: The Kobo eReader Unveils Its New Goodreads Competitor!

A new contender has arisen to challenge the Amazon Kindle and Goodreads’ dominance in reading management.

On Monday, StoryGraph, a reading tracker, partnered with Kobo, the manufacturer of a versatile e-reader, enabling avid readers to seamlessly monitor their reading activities.

This partnership was initially revealed in May and is now operational for all content associated with Kobo accounts.

Kobo becomes the first e-reader to collaborate with StoryGraph’s community platform, providing a fresh approach to diminishing Amazon’s stronghold in the digital book landscape. Historically, Amazon has maintained its reader base by offering competitive book prices while leveraging Goodreads as a vibrant social platform for readers.

Despite numerous alternatives to Goodreads emerging over the years, few have made significant inroads due to their inability to integrate with users’ e-reading devices, as Goodreads has done for Kindle users.

The new integration between StoryGraph and Kobo addresses this gap, allowing users’ reading progress to synchronize automatically with their StoryGraph accounts. This means when a user completes a book on their Kobo eReader, it will immediately reflect as “Read” on StoryGraph, keeping their reading statistics current. This functionality is compatible with both e-books and audiobooks across all Kobo devices and apps.

Reading trackers like StoryGraph have gained popularity by providing an effortless way for individuals to document their reading history and favorites, while facilitating the discovery of recommendations based on communal reading trends. As implied by its name, StoryGraph delves into extensive analytics, offering users detailed insights into their reading preferences, pace, and other metrics to enhance their habits.

Additionally, it fosters an online community that encourages participation in reading challenges and book clubs, motivating users to read by tracking their accomplishments (though opinions on gamification in social apps vary, its application here is deemed beneficial for fostering reading habits).

Founded in 2019 by Nadia Odunayo and Rob Frelow, StoryGraph originated as a personal project without outside investments. It has since flourished into a community of over five million readers. The partnership with Kobo will introduce the app to Kobo’s 12 million users across 190 nations.

Kobo and StoryGraph are not the only ones looking to benefit from the recent surge in reading culture, fueled by online communities such as #booktok and various reading platforms. According to Pew Research, approximately 31% of U.S. adults reported reading an e-book in the past year, a significant rise from 17% in 2011.

Additionally, Everand, a startup offering an e-book and audiobook marketplace, recently acquired Fable, a digital book community app maker, aiming to provide similar integration capabilities without the need for dedicated hardware (hinting that Kobo may consider a future acquisition of StoryGraph).

Notably, the Kobo-StoryGraph integration does not necessitate a subscription. However, StoryGraph does offer a $5 monthly Plus subscription that unlocks more detailed statistics, personalized filters, custom charts, and comparison features.
