Anthropic Launches Cutting-Edge Laboratory for Innovative Biological Research

Anthropic has confirmed that it operates a wet biology laboratory in the Bay Area, utilizing its AI models for real-world experiments.

Prominent figures in the AI sector have long claimed that artificial intelligence could play a crucial role in treating human diseases. Dario Amodei expressed confidence recently, stating, “I believe that AI could cure most major diseases in the next 5–10 years.” Achieving this would require a large language model (LLM) capable of testing its hypotheses in practical settings.

“We assert that real lab work is still the ultimate test for biological research, and it will be for the foreseeable future,” said Eric Kauderer-Abrams, Anthropic’s head of life sciences, in a conversation with Reuters. “We are actively engaged in that today.” He noted that the lab functions similarly to other biotech laboratories, conducting independent research while collaborating with external partners.

This development aligns with expectations, given that Anthropic acquired Coefficient Bio, a discreet AI biotechnology company, this past April.

While Anthropic has not disclosed the specific projects underway in the wet lab, it has indicated that the primary focus is on fundamental biological research rather than directly on drug development.

Anthropic seeks to avoid the impression that it is vying with the pharmaceutical sector, where it has established significant partnerships and clientele—recently announcing a collaboration with Novo Nordisk for joint drug discovery. The company has previously encountered criticism for rolling out products perceived to compete with those of its partners.

In light of this, Anthropic initiated a Life Sciences Verification Program this week, allowing verified biological researchers access to its advanced models. The company also shared recent findings on its research aimed at facilitating drug discovery, including reports on enhancing protein design and advancing bimolecular modeling.

Nevertheless, the tech community is still processing the recent resignation of Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon, who cautioned that “the individuals developing AI genuinely believe it could lead to catastrophic consequences by the end of the decade.” An alignment expert at Anthropic has suggested a greater than 10% likelihood that AI could pose an existential threat to humanity within that timeframe.

This growing anxiety prompted CEO Dario Amodei to publish a post over the weekend urging the industry to slow its pace and consider self-regulation, consistently citing bioterrorism as one of AI’s most significant risks.

The combination of these alarming predictions and the existence of the wet lab has not gone unnoticed in technology circles. Investor and founder of an AI coding startup, Chamath Palihapitiya, humorously remarked on X: “The team behind hits like ‘We’re All Going To Die’ and ‘Regulate Me Now’ is setting up a wet lab in SF. I do not recommend this.”
