Celebrating 250 Years: The Challenge of AI-Driven Collective Wisdom in America’s Birthday Bash

Picture gathering 250 individuals in a large space to engage in meaningful discussions on significant topics, weighing various arguments and ultimately reaching conclusions that reflect their collective understanding and values.

Now, envision organizing such a discussion on the occasion of America’s 250^th anniversary, inviting 250 randomly chosen Americans to identify the top three innovations this nation has provided to the global community over the past two and a half centuries. What insights would they present?

It may seem unrealistically ambitious at first.

After all, it’s challenging to orchestrate a substantive dialogue among even a small group. When scaled up, the complexity increases, making it difficult for everyone to contribute or engage effectively. This limitation is the reason that traditional business meetings or focus groups typically include no more than eight to ten participants, as meaningful conversations rarely scale well.

To tackle this challenge, a new form of AI technology known as “hyper-communication” is transforming large-scale discussions. This technology utilizes specialized AI agents to facilitate real-time connections among participants, allowing them to debate and discuss topics regardless of group size. The aim is to enable extensive engagement where hundreds or even thousands can deliberate thoughtfully and articulate their views on various issues.

Two years ago, I explored the potential of this technology in an article about “Collective Superintelligence.” The piece elaborated on how AI can interlink large groups of people, significantly enhancing their collective intelligence. Here, I will concentrate on the discussions among 250 Americans on their nation’s birthday.

To realize this, I collaborated with Unanimous AI to gather a diverse group of at least 250 Americans, representing a wide array of regions and a mix of political and social backgrounds. They participated in a twenty-minute online debate via a hyper-communication platform named Thinkscape, which allows for large-scale discussions through text, voice, or video.

Once the participants were connected, we tasked them with identifying the top three contributions made by America to the world in the last 250 years. This was not merely a collection of opinions but a deep exploration of ideas, arguments, and evidence. The group arrived at a set of results that were unexpected yet credible upon reflection.

Before presenting the conclusions, I want to highlight what the debate process looked like behind the scenes. There were 277 participants, each engaging in discussion with four to five others in parallel spaces. The power lies in the network of AI agents that synchronize these small groups into a cohesive live deliberation. Here’s a glimpse of it in action:

Throughout the discussions, the group generated 94 distinct ideas and gradually refined them to a top 10, then a top 3. The visualization above illustrates how the top ten ideas developed and competed for support during the live debate.

The most fascinating aspect of such an extensive debate is not merely the results but the rationale that shaped them. Here’s the reasoning behind the “top three innovations” attributed to America over the past 250 years:

#1: The Internet: “We believe that America’s most significant contribution over the last 250 years is the internet. Originating exclusively in the U.S. through academic and governmental research, it has expanded globally with immense effects. It has altered communication, democratized access to information and education, facilitated commerce and healthcare, and bolstered civic engagement. While we recognized some negative impacts (like misinformation and privacy concerns) and debated the idea that it may not be uniquely American, its foundational significance stands out.”

#2 Advances in medicine: “We contend that the U.S. has saved and extended the lives of millions worldwide. With American innovations in vaccines and treatments eradicating or controlling deadly diseases, life expectancy has notably improved, alongside technological evolution. Major progress in cancer research and revolutionary medical equipment have transformed healthcare quality. Though these advancements have spread globally, the U.S. continues to be a premier destination for advanced medical care.”

#3: Spreading democracy: “We assert that one of America’s most crucial contributions is its democratic governance system. The U.S. has exemplified democracy, serving as a global model. The U.S. Constitution has inspired democratic movements worldwide and fosters human rights and liberty. By equipping citizens with the power to vote and select their leaders, this system has laid the groundwork for societal progress and contributed to establishing thriving democracies worldwide.”

It’s essential to note that this reflects 100% human intelligence — a genuine representation of the collective insight, wisdom, and principles of 277 randomly selected Americans. The AI agents’ role in this hyper-communication system is to connect individuals, not to replace them. Their purpose is to facilitate scalable human deliberation, enabling participants to voice their opinions, engage with others, and collaboratively arrive at conclusions based on their merits. The lingering question is — what should we explore next?
