A Comprehensive Overview of 2026’s Significant Tech Layoffs Highlighting AI References

On Monday, Microsoft announced it has cut approximately 4,800 positions, representing 2.1% of its total global workforce. This decision contributes to the trend of AI-related layoffs permeating the technology sector. The firm clarified that these job reductions are “not being replaced by AI” yet noted that “AI is altering methods of work” and automating routine tasks.

These layoffs reflect a growing concern within the tech community, where companies continue to report record profits while simultaneously reducing their staff, often citing AI as both a growth driver and a reason for the downsizing. In May, tech layoffs reached the highest number in years, largely attributed to AI, as reported by an outplacement firm. Since the beginning of 2026, approximately 120,000 tech positions have been eliminated, according to a dedicated layoff tracker.
