Sony Planning Film Adaptation of the Hit Indie Horror Game Mouthwashing

Karyn Kusama is set to direct the project.
The indie horror title Mouthwashing is transitioning to the big screen. According to reports, Sony Pictures Entertainment has secured the film rights from developer Wrong Organ, with Karyn Kusama, known for her work on Jennifer’s Body and The Invitation, set to direct.
The screenplay will be crafted by Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay, who are known for their collaboration on The Invitation, and Scott Derrickson, director of The Black Phone and Sinister, will produce. Sony appears to be banking on the engaging mix of horror expertise and popular gaming material to replicate the success of the Resident Evil series. The recent adaptation of Capcom’s franchise not only garnered critical acclaim but also proved to be a box office hit.
Mouthwashing presents a more grounded horror experience compared to the more whimsical terror found in Resident Evil. The narrative revolves around the crew of a stranded spacecraft as they gradually descend into madness. Instead of relying heavily on jump scares, the game’s deep themes and surreal visuals provide a compelling backdrop for its upcoming film adaptation.
While a release date for the film has not been announced yet, those interested in delving into its story prior to the movie can do so, as Mouthwashing is now widely accessible. Initially launched on PC in 2024, it is currently available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and through Xbox Game Pass.
