In Summary:

  • A new SIM Manager feature has been unexpectedly found in the Gemini app on a Pixel 9 with Android 17 QPR3 beta.
  • This feature allows users to create new eSIM profiles, convert from physical SIMs, transfer profiles, restore from backups, and delete profiles.
  • The feature also outlines some rules for Gemini, including limitations on tasks it won’t perform, such as activating an already installed eSIM.

The Gemini assistant currently integrates with various applications, from Gmail to YouTube Music. Now, it seems Google intends to expand its functionalities to address a less thrilling but often frustrating task—setting up eSIMs.

A new SIM Manager connector has emerged in Gemini’s app listings on a Pixel 9 running Android 17 QPR3 Beta 2, along with version 17.70.10.sa.arm64 of the Google app. This feature seems to have been activated prematurely, as it has not been officially announced by Google. It’s not available on other tested devices like the OnePlus 13R or the Samsung Galaxy S25 Plus, suggesting a current exclusive for Pixel users.

This connector is likely integrated with Google’s SIM Manager application, allowing users to manage carrier profiles without the need for physical SIM cards. With this connector, Gemini can assist in several tasks, including:

  • Creating new eSIM profiles
  • Changing a physical SIM into an eSIM
  • Transferring cellular profiles across devices
  • Restoring eSIM profiles from Google cloud backups
  • Safely removing existing eSIM profiles

A test of one of the functions showed that Gemini could successfully begin the eSIM setup process, indicating that the feature is functional, at least in part.

The details page for the connector reveals specific instructions that Gemini must follow while handling SIM Manager queries. This may explain why the feature was released prematurely, as such guidelines are generally not user-facing.

These instructions highlight certain limitations for Gemini. For example, it cannot modify billing plans, display carrier call histories, or activate already installed eSIMs on a device. Should a user request to transfer an eSIM from one phone to another, Gemini will advise that the transfer must be initiated from the new device.

Additionally, Google has instructed Gemini to avoid vague phrases like “set up my SIM,” as this could refer to a physical SIM card, which the current connector does not accommodate. Users must specify “eSIM” if they require Gemini’s assistance.

Transitioning to a new phone or switching carriers can be cumbersome, especially with eSIMs involved. Having Gemini assist with these processes through simple commands could significantly alleviate the hassle. We will monitor for broader availability in the future.

⚠️ An APK teardown identifies potential features that may be implemented in future updates based on underlying code. However, it is important to note that these anticipated features might not always make it to the public version.
