TikTok has agreed to a settlement of at least $100 million with Alabama in response to claims that the platform misled users regarding safety and was intentionally designed to engage children excessively. The case was set to go to trial this week.
The office of the Alabama attorney general stated that the total payout from TikTok could rise to $300 million based on specific conditions. Additionally, the company has committed to implementing a daily limit of two hours for users under the age of 18, alongside enhanced parental controls, restrictions on usage during the night, and limitations on cosmetic filters.
Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall expressed that parents in Alabama can feel more secure knowing that concrete measures are being established to protect their children from the risks associated with social media addiction.
In its own announcement, TikTok indicated that this settlement reinforces its dedication and primary goal of consistently improving its robust safety measures to safeguard teenagers.
Earlier this year, in August, TikTok had also reached a $400 million agreement with the Department of Justice after facing accusations of breaching child privacy regulations.
