iOS 27 will introduce a feature allowing a single SIM to be utilized across two devices.
Apple is set to roll out a new capability known as iPhone Handoff with the release of iOS 27, which enables users to utilize the same eSIM across two smartphones. Initially, this feature will be accessible to T-Mobile customers in the United States and Deutsche Telekom users in Germany. T-Mobile has announced a fee of $5 per month for subscribers wanting to take advantage of this functionality, raising concerns about such additional charges in the market.
It’s important to note that both devices cannot share the same number simultaneously. T-Mobile users will have the option to select which device is active at any given time, allowing them to switch phones whenever they choose. Their calls, voicemails, messages, and the Find My feature will automatically transition to the iPhone currently in use. Furthermore, iCloud data and third-party applications will synchronize across devices seamlessly.
Setting up iPhone Handoff can be done via the Settings menu on the existing device or during the activation of a new iPhone. Users need to navigate to Cellular in Settings on their new phone, followed by selecting “Set up Cellular” or “Add eSIM.” After choosing an iPhone, they will click “Continue,” and then “Transfer.” By following the on-screen instructions on both devices and unlocking the intended iPhone, a confirmation message stating “Switched to this iPhone” will appear, indicating that the selected device is now utilizing their number.
For iPhone Handoff to function, both devices must be operating on iOS 27 and linked to the same Apple ID. The official rollout for iOS 27 is scheduled for September 14.
