In a surprising turn of events in the gaming world, Nexus Mods, the leading platform for mod sharing, has officially acquired SteamDB. The announcement came through a post on Nexus Mods’ website, where they referred to SteamDB as one of the most reliable resources for PC gamers.
SteamDB was established in 2013 by two individuals known as Marlamin and xPaw, initially functioning as a side project. As the site gained popularity, managing it became increasingly challenging. Nexus Mods revealed that discussions with xPaw began when he sought assistance, as he alone could not provide the resources and development support necessary for the site’s growth.
Nexus Mods aligns closely with SteamDB’s principles, both platforms primarily aim to cater to a dedicated community of PC gaming enthusiasts. SteamDB offers a wealth of information, including player statistics, price histories, updates, and other relevant data across the Steam platform. This capability to track mod installations in relation to specific game versions was particularly attractive to Nexus Mods, as unanticipated updates can often disrupt mod functionalities. The extensive historical data available on SteamDB is expected to enhance ongoing development.
The SteamDB brand will remain unchanged for the time being, allowing users to continue utilizing it as they currently do. The main alterations will be largely internal, with a specialized team set to take charge of the database—aiming to enhance its infrastructure, security, and scalability. Traditionally dependent on community-donated Steam keys for tracking game files, SteamDB will still rely on its user base, but Nexus Mods plans to support this aspect by providing funding for keys as well.
In a statement addressing the community, xPaw expressed confidence in the capabilities of Nexus Mods, emphasizing their commitment to preserving the project’s unique qualities rather than altering what makes it special. He also commented on the challenges posed by AI advancements in a post-COVID landscape, which have affected his enthusiasm for the project.
