Unveiling the Minds Behind the Innovative ‘Stealth Model’ Ox Alpha

A new AI model named Ox Alpha has sparked significant intrigue across various online platforms, leading to intense discussions regarding its origins.

Released on OpenRouter on Thursday, this free model is characterized as “a reasoning model designed for coding, sustained agentic work, and production workload.” Patrick Collison, CEO of Stripe—which is in the process of acquiring OpenRouter—took to X to praise Ox Alpha as “very impressive.”

But what do we really know about the creators of Ox Alpha? The OpenRouter page labels it a “stealth model,” stating it was “developed and operated by a third-party provider who has chosen to remain anonymous during this preview.”

It’s no surprise that much of the debate has centered on the possibility of a link to China. AI expert Andrew Curran noted on Friday that initial discussions revolved around the GLM models from the Chinese firm Z.ai, though he mentioned that sentiments seemed to have shifted by the following morning.

Additionally, a piece on Wccftech initially pointed to GLM as the likely source but later updated its stance to suggest that Ox Alpha might be an undisclosed iteration of Microsoft’s MAI. Discussions on Reddit reflected this uncertainty, with one user asserting that Ox Alpha “can’t be the Chinese,” while another expressed “high confidence” in the notion that it indeed is.
