Apple Watch Battery Replacement: Cost Breakdown and Is It Worth the Investment?

Is it better to replace your Apple Watch battery or buy a new one?

Investing in a premium Apple Watch model warrants a desire for longevity. However, the lithium-ion batteries used in these devices will gradually lose efficiency, leading to quicker drain times and frequent recharges. Fortunately, this degradation doesn’t require you to replace the entire watch; the battery can be changed, allowing you to extend its usage while also being environmentally conscious.

Paying around $99 for a battery replacement can be a sensible choice if your watch still functions well otherwise. It’s essential to weigh whether this cost is better spent on a new model that offers enhancements in design and features, along with compatibility with the latest watchOS versions.

Cost of Replacing an Apple Watch Battery

You can have your Apple Watch repaired directly by Apple, costing around $99 for the service. Retailers like Best Buy also offer authorized repair options at the same price, with repairs typically taking about a week. You can book these services either online or in-store.

If you have an active AppleCare plan that includes battery issues, a battery that drops below 80% capacity will be covered. However, normal battery wear may not be included, particularly if your device is older than its warranty. Apple does provide ongoing AppleCare for Apple Watch, which can be paid monthly or annually, though it still involves service fees.

Alternatively, if you’re skilled, you might consider replacing the battery yourself. Companies like iFixit sell replacement batteries for some models, and they offer detailed guides for the process. However, this DIY approach carries risks and is not recommended unless you’re comfortable with technical repairs.

Deciding Between a Battery Replacement and Buying a New Watch

Many users still operate models like the Series 4 with success. The previous watchOS 26 had broader compatibility, but if you own a Series 5 or older, it’s no longer supported, with the software support ending in September 2024.

Compatibility with iPhones isn’t an issue, as older versions of watchOS still work with newer iOS systems. However, the latest Apple Watch models require more recent iPhones to function properly.

Apple Watches depreciate faster than many other Apple products, meaning that you may not recover your battery replacement costs if you decide to sell it later. It’s wise to check the market for comparable models to assess potential resale value. If you plan to give the watch to someone else, a battery replacement may be a thoughtful gesture to enhance their experience.

When making your decision, consider the watch’s age, software support, battery replacement cost, and anticipated support lifespan. For models such as the Series 6 or 7 and newer, battery replacement is advisable, while for older models that are over five years old, upgrading would likely be a better choice.
