Pixel Watch 4 Receives Potentially Life-Saving Upgrade from Pixel Watch 5

Summary
- The new Breathing Emergency Detection feature from Pixel Watch 5 is now accessible on the Pixel Watch 4 as well.
- This feature leverages AI to assess heart rate, motion, altitude, and blood oxygen levels to identify possible breathing emergencies and will automatically contact emergency services if necessary.
- Currently, it can be used on the Pixel Watch 4 and 5 across ten European nations, with plans for broader availability in the future.
Google recently unveiled the Pixel Watch 5 and introduced a significant health and safety feature that is now available for the Pixel Watch 4 as well. The Breathing Emergency Detection, a part of Google’s Health Guardian feature set, can detect if a user may have stopped breathing and will alert emergency services if there is no response.
According to information from Google, this feature can now be utilized on both the Pixel Watch 4 and 5 in various European countries, including the UK, Germany, France, Ireland, Austria, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and Switzerland. However, the United States is not included in this rollout yet. Google has mentioned plans to expand the availability to additional countries soon.
Understanding Breathing Emergency Detection
As per Google, the Breathing Emergency Detection feature is intended for scenarios where an individual suffers a significant drop in blood oxygen levels and is unable to seek assistance. Examples provided include cases of severe pneumonia, accidental drug overdoses, or choking incidents.
This feature employs an AI-driven algorithm that examines data from the watch’s sensors related to heart rate, movement, and altitude. It firstly determines if the individual is in a state of low movement and confirms that they are not experiencing rapid altitude changes. Furthermore, the watch verifies that the wearer has not been asleep for over 30 minutes to minimize false alarms, particularly from conditions like sleep apnea.
Upon identifying a potential breathing emergency, the watch initiates a series of alerts. It first vibrates strongly and shows a full-screen warning. If there is no interaction from the user, an audible alert is triggered, starting a 30-second countdown.
If the wearer still does not respond, the connected phone or a Pixel Watch with LTE capabilities will automatically contact emergency services. An automated message will inform the operator of the breathing emergency and that the user is unresponsive, along with their location. If set up, alerts can also be sent to emergency contacts.
Google states that this feature has been developed in collaboration with various healthcare professionals, including internal medicine doctors, cardiologists, anesthesiologists, and emergency medical services. The efficacy of the algorithm has been validated in clinical settings using medically supervised simulations and extensive real-world data.
The company is committed to extending Breathing Emergency Detection to more nations in the future. Users can opt-in to this feature, which is also contingent on the support of local emergency services.
