2026: Why Smartphone Colors Ignite My Excitement More Than Their Features

The colorful trends in the upcoming tech season are sparking excitement.

The new hardware season indicates that smartphones are now in an iterative stage, where the most captivating aspect of the upcoming Pixel 11 series appears to be its color range. This trend may also apply to the anticipated iPhone 18 Pro and other devices expected later this year.

Despite any price increases, the Pixel series continues to be a top choice for Android users. In my view, the recent Pixels are among the most aesthetically pleasing smartphones available. While many devices are primarily large screens, Google’s design resonates with me, offering quality construction and a pleasant grip, along with vibrant color options. The Pixel 10 featured unique shades like indigo blue and “lemongrass,” which made them stand out last year, especially the familiar nod to the original Pixel’s “really blue.”

The Pixel series truly stands out this year

This year, Google has opted for an even bolder color selection. The Pixel 11 Pro is available in a beautiful light orange shade, referred to as “canyon,” coupled with a polished gold aluminum frame and gold accents around the camera area. The magenta Pixel 11 emerges as a distinct hot pink, ensuring it stands out amid the competition.

Considering this year’s upgrades are rather minimal, it’s not surprising that the vibrant colors are catching my attention the most. It’s been acknowledged for years that smartphones have reached a level of maturity, with many being robust enough to last several years. There isn’t necessarily a compelling reason for users to switch from the Pixel 10 series, but as someone eager to try the Pixel, the eye-catching color choices certainly make that decision more enticing.

Apple is also taking risks with colors

Meanwhile, Apple is looking to introduce more vivid options for the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro series. Historically, iPhone colors have alternated between highly saturated and barely noticeable palettes. The Pro series has routinely leaned toward traditional colors like black, silver, and gold, with occasional exceptions like the deep purple of the iPhone 14 Pro.

Last year introduced the eye-catching “cosmic orange” for the iPhone 17 Pro. For the upcoming model, speculations suggest a new “dark cherry” alongside a lighter blue, in addition to the standard silver and black choices. While the dark cherry seems less bold than the previous year’s orange, it’s often the case that colors appear more appealing in person compared to digital renders. The truth will be revealed next month during the official announcement.

Samsung appears to have missed the color trend

This year, Samsung stands out for its contrastingly muted color choices. The Galaxy S26 lineup features colors that can be generously described as “discreet.” Typically, this approach reflects Samsung’s style, which is another reason I prefer the Pixel lineup. Their new Z Flip 8 and Z Fold 8 models carry a similarly subdued aesthetic, which seems like a missed opportunity for distinctiveness.

I understand that color preferences may seem superficial, yet when investing in devices, having something aesthetically pleasing to pull out of your pocket can enhance the experience. Although cases can be utilized to refresh a device’s look, not everyone budgets for additional accessories. For many users, a classic black or white phone is adequate—I’m just pleased that Google offers a rich variety of color options this year.
