ChatGPT has made its way to desktops worldwide, but until now, it has been missing in the Linux ecosystem. Many members of the open-source developer community have been urging OpenAI to introduce its chatbot to the Linux platform.
This week, OpenAI addressed this gap by launching a dedicated ChatGPT application for Linux users.
“Linux has been one of the most highly requested platforms for the desktop application, and this launch brings ChatGPT and Codex to every primary desktop operating system,” the organization stated on Tuesday.
The new application, now in its preview phase, enables Linux users to access ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex on various distributions. This launch is available globally as of Tuesday.
The distributions that will be supported include desktop versions of Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, and Fedora 43 and 44. While Linux encompasses numerous distributions, OpenAI’s selected options serve as the foundation for many other desktop variations which should also be compatible with the company’s applications.
Notably, OpenAI’s debut comes after Anthropic, which introduced a Claude desktop application for Linux roughly a month ago. Anthropic’s app is compatible with Ubuntu 22.04 or later, and Debian 12 or later.
