Airbnb Leverages AI to Accelerate Feature Rollouts While Experimenting with an Innovative Search Function

Airbnb is gradually integrating artificial intelligence (AI) features into its user interface while simultaneously leveraging the technology for product development. Earlier this year, the company reported that AI is responsible for generating 60% of its code. In a recent earnings call, co-founder and CEO Brian Chesky highlighted that AI is accelerating the creation of new features.

Chesky noted that AI has enabled the company to cut the time from idea generation to feature launch by 60%.

“Today, we’re building, testing, and iterating faster than ever before. For some of our key projects, we have managed to decrease the time from concept to launch by as much as 60%. Additionally, when comparing the last six months of this year to the same period last year, we have nearly increased our feature releases and enhancements by 80%,” he stated during the company’s Q2 earnings call.

He emphasized that AI has made significant contributions in areas such as search functionality, user sign-up, checkout processes, and payments. Moreover, Airbnb has introduced features aimed at streamlining the onboarding process for hosts.

While the incorporation of AI features for consumers has been slower, it has primarily focused on aspects like review summaries and highlighting listings.

Chesky has previously indicated that simply adopting a chatbot front-end would not suffice for the travel sector. The company has instead concentrated on creating AI tools for search, discovery, and customer support.

During the earnings call, he mentioned that Airbnb will begin testing AI-driven search capabilities. However, the company is cautious about imposing this feature on users familiar with the existing search and filter options. To address this, Airbnb plans to introduce a toggle allowing users to switch to AI search, enabling them to type queries in natural language to receive visually formatted results.

“The titles generated in the responses could actually be created by AI and designed to be conversational, akin to reading a chatbot, but presented visually. Once on the product description page, highlights will be generated in real-time and tailored to individual users,” Chesky explained.

On the customer support side, Airbnb has significantly incorporated AI. The company introduced its AI-powered assistant in North America in 2025 and has since expanded it to cover over 50 languages, with plans to add voice call capabilities later this year.

Airbnb has indicated that nearly 45% of customer inquiries handled by its AI agent are resolved without human interaction, resulting in a 16% reduction in support costs per booking year-over-year.

The company reported solid financial outcomes for the quarter ending in June, with a 17% increase in revenue year-over-year, reaching $3.6 billion, and an adjusted EBITDA rise of 21% to $1.3 billion.
