Top 5 Fresh Weekend Picks on Netflix, Prime Video, and Beyond (August 7-9)

As the month begins, streaming platforms are rolling out an exciting lineup of new and returning series. Prime Video is introducing a fresh teen drama that promises to stand out amidst the competition, and it has quickly become my top recommendation for viewing this weekend.

While Prime Video may have an excellent new offering, Apple TV+ is bringing back a fan favorite with the return of Coach Lasso in a new season of the beloved soccer comedy. This list also features a sultry drama from Ryan Murphy, an endearing teen melodrama, and a reality TV staple. All these shows are available to stream in the U.S.

The Challenge: Cutthroat

The MTV staple finds a new home

I must admit, reality TV isn’t my forte. I’m out of touch with the latest events on shows like Summer House and Love Island. However, The Challenge has been my favorite reality competition for over two decades. The latest season, Cutthroat, is breaking new ground as it is set to stream exclusively on Paramount+ starting this month, marking the first time it won’t air on MTV.

This season revives one of the series’ most intriguing twists: the winning team captain can either keep the prize money or share it. I still vividly remember Johnny Bananas causing an uproar by opting to keep the cash for himself during Rivals III. Will someone replicate that bold move in Cutthroat? Given the nature of many contestants, who often seek fame, I wouldn’t be surprised if the individual winner chooses to keep the earnings for themselves.

The initial two episodes of The Challenge: Cutthroat are now available for streaming on Paramount+.

My Life with the Walter Boys Season 3

Teen romances can be quite intricate

I have a soft spot for teen dramas that tap into the complexity of youthful emotions. We’ve all felt that frustration of being unable to express our feelings—if you say otherwise, I’m skeptical. My Life with the Walter Boys skillfully highlights those feelings of teenage angst.

Season 3 resumes right after the shocking climax of the previous season. Jackie (Nikki Rodriguez) and Cole (Noah LaLonde) find themselves confessing their feelings for each other, despite Jackie’s relationship with Alex (Ashby Gentry). Complications arise when Alex overhears their admission just as their father (Marc Blucas) is hospitalized. The drama is set to unfold.

All episodes of My Life with the Walter Boys are currently streaming on Netflix.

The Shards

Glimpses of wealth and mystery in 1980s Los Angeles

The Shards invites viewers into the glamorous world of 1980s Los Angeles, adapted from Bret Easton Ellis’ eponymous novel. It centers around Bret (Igby Rigney), a soon-to-be senior at an elite prep school who aspires to be a writer.

Bret and his friends—Susan (Kaia Gerber), Debbie (Hayes Warner), and Thom (Graham Campbell)—lead a privileged lifestyle until chaos ensues with the introduction of Robert (Homer Gere) and a serial killer targeting their social circle. Bret becomes increasingly consumed by these events, spiraling into a state of paranoia. Ryan Murphy, known for his vibrant narratives, is the perfect person to breathe life into Ellis’ dramatic tale, which will be available on Hulu this August.

The first two episodes of The Shards are now streaming on Hulu.

Ted Lasso Season 4

Believe, again

It’s likely that many of you are aware that Ted Lasso was originally conceived as a three-season series. The finale of season 3 aired in May 2023; however, due to its immense popularity, the creators decided to add a fourth season.

After a three-year time jump, Ted (Jason Sudeikis) finds himself in Kansas City, having departed from AFC Richmond. However, Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham), Higgins (Jeremy Swift), and Keeley (Juno Temple) persuade him to return and coach their women’s team. Coach Lasso is back in England, equipped with his inspiring lessons. Can his optimism capture the audience once again in season 4?

The first episode of Ted Lasso season 4 is now available to stream on Apple TV+.

1
Sterling Point

Young adults face challenges too

If you haven’t come across Megan Park yet, it’s time to take note. Known for her role in The Secret Life of the American Teenager, she has transitioned successfully into writing and directing, with notable works like The Fallout and My Old Ass. She now brings her talents to television with Sterling Point.

The story follows Brooklyn teen Annie Jacobson (Ella Rubin) and her twin, Connor (Keen Ruffalo), as they discover they’ve inherited their grandfather’s property in Canada, known as Sterling Point. Upon arriving, Annie meets Ramona (Amélie Hoeferle), who has unexpected connections to her family. While the teen drama sometimes leans towards melodrama, Park’s Sterling Point opts for a grounded storyline, which makes it stand out.

All eight episodes of Sterling Point are now streaming on Prime Video.

There are plenty of other options available for streaming

Don’t worry—these five titles are just a glimpse into the wealth of great content out there. Our team offers daily recommendations for must-see shows. For those with new TVs, consider exploring Netflix with films like Extraction 2 and Roma to test its capabilities. If you’re short on time, Paramount+ features numerous shows ideal for a quick lunchtime viewing.
