Tech Giants Face Wrongful Death Lawsuit Filed by Four U.S. Families

Families criticize social media giants over their harmful influence on youth.

A new lawsuit seeks to hold various social media companies accountable for the harm they allegedly cause among young users. The Social Media Victims Law Center (SMVLC) has initiated a personal injury and wrongful death lawsuit against Meta, TikTok, Snap, and Google, claiming that these platforms have created addictive and harmful environments contributing to the deaths of four children.

The suit alleges that these companies have disregarded numerous warnings from their own researchers, concealed harmful evidence, and designed systems that exploit the vulnerabilities of minors. Furthermore, the SMVLC claims that user behavior tracking allowed these platforms to promote content, such as “diet and beauty ads, appearance-altering filters, and features encouraging social comparison,” which resulted in increased rates of “depression, self-harm, and suicidal thoughts” in pursuit of greater user engagement. The tragic incidents connected to the lawsuit occurred between July 2024 and September 2025 across Texas, North Carolina, Minnesota, and Tennessee, while the complaint was filed in Delaware following the unsealing of internal documents from these social media firms in recent court cases.

We have contacted the implicated companies for comments and will provide updates as they become available. A spokesperson for Google stated, “Ensuring that young users have a safer and healthier online experience has always been integral to our efforts. We work alongside mental health and parenting specialists to create services that are appropriate for different age groups and offer comprehensive parental controls. We express our heartfelt condolences to the families and are actively reviewing the claims presented in this lawsuit.”

In addition to this recent case, the same platforms are also facing other legal challenges. Earlier this summer, four U.S. states filed a lawsuit against Meta, alleging that Facebook and Instagram are designed to be addictive while misleading the public about their safety. Additionally, in the previous month, Meta, Snap, and TikTok each settled a lawsuit concerning social media addiction brought forth by a Kentucky school district.
