Netflix Surpasses BBC in Recent UK Viewership Rankings

Recent findings indicate a shift in viewing preferences toward Netflix.
The UK’s communications authority, Ofcom, has released its yearly analysis of media consumption in the country. A notable point from this year’s report is that, for the first time, British viewers are more inclined to choose Netflix over the BBC. The findings indicate that 26% of respondents consider Netflix their primary choice, compared to 25% for the BBC and 15% for ITV. This shift highlights a significant transformation in the broadcasting landscape, especially considering Netflix’s competition with long-established networks like the BBC.
The report also uncovers generational differences in viewing habits. Among those aged 25 to 34, Netflix has become the preferred platform, while older audiences continue to favor traditional broadcasters. Meanwhile, viewers aged 16 to 24 are increasingly turning to YouTube, which has seen a doubling in minutes watched since 2022. Overall, the average viewing time for Brits across all devices now stands at 41 minutes per day, a trend partially attributed to older individuals opting for YouTube instead of traditional television. This rise in YouTube popularity has raised concerns among traditional broadcasters, especially in light of its impact on recent acquisitions in the media sector.
Compounding Netflix’s growth is the news that the BBC has announced the cancellation of several popular shows, including Blankety Blank, Celebrity Mastermind, and Live at the Apollo. These cuts are part of a plan to save £500 million ($664 million) over the next five years, and they are expected to result in the elimination of approximately 150 hours of original programming by the end of 2028. This situation may encourage viewers to explore more content available on Netflix.
