Stripe and Advent Allegedly Bid Approximately $53.4 Billion for PayPal

Stripe, in collaboration with private equity firm Advent International, has reportedly made a bid to purchase PayPal, with the deal estimated at around $53.4 billion.
According to sources, the bid was submitted earlier this month and is supported by nearly $50 billion in pledged bank financing. The proposal envisions joint ownership of PayPal, with Stripe and Advent each holding equal shares.
This is not the first time that Stripe has been associated with a potential acquisition of PayPal. In February, there were indications that Stripe was looking into a takeover and had entered into initial talks, although no formal offer was made at that stage.
Should this acquisition proceed, it would merge two major players in the digital payments sector. PayPal boasts approximately 440 million active accounts and processes around $1.8 trillion in payment volume in 2025. In contrast, Stripe handles $1.9 trillion in transactions during the same timeframe, having reached a valuation of $159 billion earlier this year.
As of now, PayPal has not publicly addressed the bid.
The timing of this potential agreement is crucial for PayPal. The company welcomed new CEO Enrique Lores in March after a profit warning was issued. Subsequently, there have been strategies proposed to cut costs by at least $1.5 billion over the next couple of years, as PayPal aims to regain robust growth. Reports also indicate plans to reduce the workforce by about 20%.
No immediate comments have been received from PayPal, Stripe, or Advent International.
