WGA Takes Legal Action to Halt Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery Merger

Concerns are being raised about a wealthy family’s control over a significant portion of the entertainment industry in the United States.

The Writers Guild of America East and West have come together to file an antitrust lawsuit against the acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery by Paramount Skydance. The lawsuit argues that this merger breaches US antitrust regulations and poses particular threats to writers in the industry.

The unions express concerns that the merger would empower the combined company to cut costs by underpaying writers and reducing job opportunities. They warn that diminished competition among studios could lead to a trend where projects prioritize the safest financial options over innovative and unique ideas. The lawsuit cites past mergers, including the 2022 Warner Bros.-Discovery merger and the anticipated 2025 Paramount-Skydance merger, suggesting these often result in layoffs and budget cuts.

Additionally, a coalition of 12 state attorneys general launched a separate antitrust action to challenge the merger just yesterday. Paramount secured approval for the $110 billion deal in June following a lengthy and competitive process in which it successfully countered an initial bid from Netflix to purchase part of the Warner Bros. Discovery operations.
