Summary:
- Microsoft is enhancing the integration of phones with Windows 11 by refining its Phone Link feature.
- A new smartphone flyout will provide easy access to phone notifications and features.
- The company is also developing a standalone messaging application.
In its quest to make Windows and Android devices work more seamlessly together, Microsoft has made strides since the launch of the Your Phone app in 2018, which allowed users to connect their mobile devices to their PCs. This application has since been rebranded to Phone Link and Link to Windows. Recent reports indicate that Microsoft is planning significant updates to enhance this functionality for a more integrated user experience.
As reported by industry insiders, Microsoft is considering multiple enhancements, including an upgrade to the Phone Companion feature situated within the Start menu. The revamped Phone Companion is expected to display recent activities from the user’s mobile device without requiring them to open the Phone Link app, along with the ability to hover over items for more detailed views like complete messages.
One of the notable changes users might see is a dedicated smartphone icon in the Taskbar. When connected, clicking this icon will open a flyout interface displaying the phone’s status and offering toggles for settings such as do not disturb and vibrate mode. This feature is set to allow users to conveniently transfer files to their mobile devices by simply dragging them to the phone icon.
Additionally, improvements are also anticipated for clipboard history synchronization. While users can currently sync the most recent clipboard entry between their phone and PC, Microsoft aims to enable syncing of the entire clipboard history across devices.
Lastly, a new dedicated Messages app is under development. Unlike the existing messaging functionality in the Phone Link app, this new application aims to be a standalone feature that can be pinned on the Start menu for easier access.
Currently, these features are in the prototype stage, and changes may occur before they are rolled out to the public. Microsoft is likely to gather feedback from its Insider community to refine these updates prior to launch.
