Volkswagen Hires 100 Sheep to Maintain Polish Solar Farm

It’s a unique partnership.

Volkswagen has welcomed a flock of 100 sheep to one of its sites in Europe. These sheep are now grazing at a solar farm that supplies energy to the company’s manufacturing facility in Poznań, Poland. In addition to serving as a natural alternative to traditional lawn maintenance, these animals are involved in a research initiative focused on agrivoltaics, a concept that aims to create a synergistic relationship between agriculture and energy production. The Poznań University of Life Sciences is overseeing this project, investigating how grazing influences animal well-being, biodiversity, soil health, plant life, and the local microclimate.

Marzena Pillich-Grońska, the director of Volkswagen Poznań, stated, “The photovoltaic farm is now more than just a source of renewable energy; it also enhances biodiversity, supports local agriculture, and facilitates scientific investigation. This sheep grazing initiative exemplifies how contemporary industry can coexist harmoniously with nature.”

A video shared by Quanta Energy, the company that constructed Volkswagen’s solar farm, features some of the sheep in their new environment.

Agrivoltaics has garnered significant interest in the energy sector as it allows for the efficient dual use of land. While there have been trials involving crops grown beneath solar panels, the introduction of livestock adds a thoughtful and charming element to the approach.
