  • T-Mobile’s Keep & Switch and Family Freedom promotions are being limited starting tomorrow.
  • Current voice customers will no longer qualify for these deals when adding a line.
  • This shift follows the company’s recent announcement about the retirement of certain legacy plans.

T-Mobile has had a challenging few weeks, and their recent decision isn’t helping matters. Following the announcement of retiring some of their legacy plans and transitioning customers to updated options, T-Mobile is now putting limitations on two of its long-standing switching promotions, stating that current voice customers will no longer be able to utilize these offers when adding an additional line.

According to reports, T-Mobile is modifying the terms for its Keep & Switch and Family Freedom promotions, effective tomorrow. The carrier’s support pages indicate that starting from July 9, these promotions will be available exclusively for new customer accounts, making existing accounts ineligible.

The Keep & Switch and Family Freedom promotions provide incentives for customers switching carriers, offering up to $800 per line to help cover any outstanding fees with their previous provider. The Keep & Switch option allows customers to bring their current device to T-Mobile, whereas Family Freedom is contingent on trading in an old phone and purchasing a new one from T-Mobile. Up until now, existing customers could also take advantage of these offers when adding a new line, making it a valuable option for those joining a family member’s T-Mobile plan from another carrier. This change, effective tomorrow, alters that advantage, although accounts with only Home Internet or T-Satellite service will still qualify.

This change likely aligns with T-Mobile’s preference for new accounts as they offer a simpler and potentially more profitable relationship for the carrier compared to merely adding lines to existing family plans. However, this shift diminishes the appeal for families looking to benefit from these promotions, particularly if a member switching still owes money on their previous device.

The announcement surfaced just days after T-Mobile revealed that it is discontinuing several older 3G and 4G plans, transitioning affected clients to newer offerings. The company mentioned that some customers would experience a “modest adjustment” on their bills, later specifying that the typical adjustment would be around $4 per line, with these changes beginning on the next billing cycle in mid-July.

While on its own, the tighter promotional rules may not seem significant, they follow closely on the heels of the migration announcement, marking another unfriendly move towards customers at a time when T-Mobile might not have needed additional negative feedback. It appears the carrier may have opted to implement all potentially adverse changes at once in hopes of mitigating any loss of business during this transition.
