Sony Promises Continued Production of Physical Discs Beyond 2028 for Pre-Release Titles

Post-2028 releases will exclusively be digital.

Sony’s decision to move away from physical game discs has not been well-received in the gaming community. Nonetheless, there is a silver lining for game developers. According to sources, Sony has assured PlayStation developers and publishers that they can still re-order existing physical titles.

In a recent post on the PlayStation blog, the company stated that the halt on the production of physical discs would not affect titles released before January 2028. It has now become clear that publishers can continue to order physical copies of their games as long as they launch before this cut-off. Reports suggest that while Sony is altering its ordering process, the specifics have yet to be disclosed. This development comes in light of Sony’s significant investment to modify its disc manufacturing facility in Salzburg, Austria, to produce optical microlenses instead.

Additionally, sources indicate that Sony informed publishers they would have the chance to release games at retail using digital codes. However, further details on this offering have not yet been revealed. While it may ease concerns about gamers being restricted to Sony’s online platform, the complete shift away from physical discs is anticipated to have profound effects on the industry.
