Over the years, open-source applications have significantly improved, making them suitable alternatives to many paid services. This development has led our team to discontinue several paid subscriptions in favor of open-source and self-hosted solutions. Below are three applications that have proven to be valuable additions to our daily operations.

Jellyfin

Host Your Own Movies and Music

Jellyfin serves as a free, open-source variant of Plex. For those unfamiliar with Plex, it essentially allows users to create their own Netflix-like media server. By installing Jellyfin on a system and pointing it to media folders containing movies,TV shows, and music, you can establish your own personal streaming service without the need for subscriptions or hidden fees.

The recent price hike of Plex’s Lifetime Pass from $250 to $750 has drawn attention to Jellyfin’s cost-free model. Many features that Plex markets as “premium,” such as hardware transcoding and the ability to share media, are available at no cost with Jellyfin. While some may argue that Plex offers a more polished experience, the cost difference makes Jellyfin appealing.

Audiobookshelf is akin to Jellyfin but for audiobooks. It allows you to manage your audiobook collection, track listening progress, and automatically fetch cover art and metadata. Users can easily navigate their own libraries without Amazon’s influence pushing new purchases.

After becoming frustrated with Audible, one of our team members turned to Audiobookshelf, finding it less intrusive. I also switched over to this app, appreciating the ability to download DRM-free audiobooks from my Audible library using tools like Libation. Moreover, you can even create your own audiobooks from ebooks and PDFs with modern text-to-speech technology.

Another team member repurposed Audiobookshelf for managing podcast episodes, as it conveniently handles RSS feeds, allowing for rules regarding how many episodes to retain. He uses the AudioBooth app in conjunction with Audiobookshelf for offline listening.

Nextcloud

All-in-One Solution to Replace Google Services

Nextcloud is more than just one application; it is a comprehensive suite. While it functions as a Google Drive-style file synchronization tool, it also manages calendars, contacts, notes, document editing, and photo management. Essentially, it offers a self-hosted alternative to much of what Google’s ecosystem includes.

One of our team members fully transitioned to Nextcloud after moving to Linux, replacing various Google services like Drive and Photos with Nextcloud equivalents. He also utilizes ONLYOFFICE for document editing directly in the browser and has integrated his email through the Mail app for streamlined access.

While I find Nextcloud to be a robust tool for personal use, I still rely on Google for work purposes due to industry standards. Additionally, it is vital to remember that Nextcloud is not a backup solution; if your home server fails, you could lose your files unless you have a proper backup strategy in place.

We continuously explore and evaluate new applications, replacing those we commonly use with alternatives to see how they measure up.
