Proton, a company dedicated to privacy-focused productivity applications, introduced the upgraded version of its public AI chatbot, Lumo, on Tuesday.
Lumo 2.0 enhances the chatbot with new features, including the ability to recognize and generate images. Users can now upload photos for analysis and editing, and Lumo can also create new images based on users’ instructions, much like other large language models.
The update also improves the Projects feature, which allows users to upload documents and work alongside Proton’s other services such as email and cloud storage. The Projects feature now includes user-controlled persistent memory, enabling Lumo to remember user preferences across different chat sessions.
According to the company, Lumo 2.0 is significantly more capable than its predecessor, responding to queries up to 76 percent faster. The new version introduces a “thinking mode” designed for tackling more intricate questions or problems.
“Lumo 2.0 has undergone a complete re-design, and its new thinking mode equips it with powerful capabilities,” stated Andy Yen, Founder and CEO of Proton. “This version shows that users can have both advanced AI features and solid privacy protections.”
Lumo’s public version offers functionality similar to other major chatbots, such as Gemini and ChatGPT, providing comparable detail and context in responses.
What sets Proton’s Lumo apart is its commitment to user privacy, employing zero-access encryption architecture to protect data both during transmission and when stored. This ensures that only the user can access their information. Proton also emphasizes that it does not log session data on its servers, meaning no one at the company can view the discussions, and it pledges never to use customer data to train AI models or share it with external parties.
Lumo 2.0 is now available for immediate use. In addition to a free public version, Proton provides paid subscription options (Plus and Professional) that offer extended features and resources.
