Discovering the Power of a Google TV Projector: Goodbye Traditional TVs?

My journey with portable projectors began in 2019 with the XGIMI MoGo Pro. It served as a great companion to my home streaming setup, providing a mobile alternative to conventional TVs that I could easily take outside or to different rooms. Over time, I’ve used different Android TV and Google TV projectors for various purposes, including as replacements for TVs when my previous Samsung Frame TV Pro malfunctioned.

The Projector: A Flexible Alternative to Bulky TVs
Upon moving to my new residence, I sought a visually appealing TV that wouldn’t dominate my living space. Initially, I considered various models, including the Samsung Frame TV. However, the upgraded Frame Pro caught my eye due to its superior brightness and contrast, alongside a sleeker design.
Despite investing significantly to make the TV visually appealing, inadequate software options often lead me to disable the aesthetic frame feature, reverting to a standard black box appearance – something I wanted to avoid in the first place.
In contrast, projectors offer a completely different experience. Typically placed on a media console or next to seating, they don’t take up valuable wall space. I could showcase artwork or add bookshelves while having a retractable white screen that can hang from the ceiling, allowing flexibility in my visual environment.
Complete Portability with Projectors
My disdain for bulky TVs aside, I enjoy the convenience of a completely portable viewing experience. Many of the projectors I’ve used come with built-in batteries, enabling me to shift seamlessly between floors in my home without hassle. Whether I’m watching videos in the kitchen or streaming a film on the bedroom ceiling, everything I need is encapsulated in one device.
Compact projectors like the XGIMI Vibe One are perfect for occasional use, allowing me to shift them easily between spaces, including guest rooms, outdoor settings, and friends’ homes. My venture into ultra-short-throw projectors has shown me they can substantially replace larger TVs, offering mobility without compromising quality.
Effortless Installation in Any Space
On the topic of ease, installing a projector is significantly simpler compared to heavy TVs. My experience with the Samsung Frame Pro was fraught with complications, including dodging unsightly cords and worrying about mounting. In contrast, most projectors are lightweight and require minimal setup, allowing me to reposition them without being stressed about damage.
Furthermore, projectors are incredibly forgiving when it comes to placement. Whether mounted on a wall, ceiling, or projected onto a white curtain, their versatility shines through. They are a safe option for homes with young children where concerns about heavy furniture tipping over arise.
Big Screen Experience without Constraints
In my setup, I opted for a 65-inch Frame Pro, which limited my choice of screen size due to wall constraints. A projector would allow for effortless adjustment in image size, maximizing screen space regardless of the wall or ceiling configuration. This flexibility means I could project up to a 100-inch image simply by altering distance.
Beyond traditional surfaces, I have the option of utilizing white curtains or portable screens whenever necessary. Currently, I utilize my bedroom’s walls for projection until I complete my room’s furnishings, showcasing the practicality of having a projector.
Google TV Integration Out of the Box
As Google TV becomes less favored among traditional TVs, its prevalence among projectors is remarkable. Brands like XGIMI and TCL provide projectors that come with integrated Google TV, eliminating the need for external devices. The seamless integration means all my preferred applications and services, including Plex and Apple TV, are readily accessible.
The convenience of casting content directly from my smartphone and controlling projector functions through the Google Home app enhances this experience. The efficiency ensures my switch to a projector wouldn’t compromise my streaming setup.
Considerations Before Switching
I understand that the transition from a TV to a projector can be daunting. Challenges such as managing ambient light, potential compromises in picture quality, and sound issues must be considered. However, advancements in ultra-short-throw technology are swiftly resolving many of these concerns.
When I want to upgrade my TV in the future, I won’t be looking at conventional models. Instead, I’ll likely opt for a projector, as the benefits significantly outweigh the drawbacks.
