Summary:
- A fresh update for ARMSX2 Refresh resolves a significant Vulkan crash issue on devices with Mali GPUs.
- This enhancement is expected to improve performance on MediaTek-powered devices and older Pixel models while running PS2 games.
- Another update has introduced new resolution scaling options for lower-end Android devices.
About two weeks ago, ARMSX2 Refresh was launched, and the PS2 emulator has been receiving regular updates since. The latest patch is particularly beneficial for users with devices featuring Arm’s Mali graphics.
The newly released version 2.3.5 of ARMSX2 Refresh addresses a major crash that occurred with the Vulkan renderer on Mali GPUs. The emulator would crash whenever a game was launched using this renderer on these devices.
“This should enhance performance for users with Mali,” states part of the update notes.

Upon testing an earlier version of ARMSX2 Refresh on the Pixel 9 Pro XL, I encountered the crash when selecting the Vulkan renderer. However, following the latest updates, those issues have been resolved, and games now load successfully.
This update is particularly advantageous for those with MediaTek devices or older Pixel smartphones. The Vulkan renderer is often the preferred choice for more demanding emulators on non-Snapdragon devices, typically enhancing performance even on Snapdragon models.
Additionally, version 2.3.2 of ARMSX2 Refresh introduced options for selecting sub-native internal resolutions. Users can now play games at 0.25x, 0.5x, or 0.75x the original output resolution, which can significantly boost performance on budget devices.
It is important to note that these updates are specifically available on ARMSX2 Refresh on GitHub, rather than the standard version available on the Play Store. The Play Store version uses a code translation method which results in a performance reduction compared to the native version.
