The year 2026 has been monumental for Google Messages. Not only is a major redesign anticipated imminently, but the platform also introduced a long-requested customization option: chat themes.
Launched in late August, chat themes now allow users to personalize their conversations with unique colors and wallpapers. This is a feature that many competing messaging apps have had for years, making its arrival in Google Messages a much-welcomed update.
Having explored the new chat themes extensively, I’ve crafted several styles that I’m quite satisfied with. If you’re seeking ideas for your own Google Messages themes, here are ten standout examples I’ve created.

Blue Texture
Let’s kick things off with some chat themes made using Google Messages’ built-in wallpapers. One of my personal favorites features calming wavy blue lines from the Textures wallpapers folder, providing a serene touch to chats without overwhelming visuals.
I coordinated this wallpaper with the third color theme option, producing a lovely blend for elements like the voice memo button.
Elephant’s Trunk Nebula
As someone who loves space, I couldn’t overlook the beautiful wallpaper of the Elephant’s Trunk Nebula found in the Space folder. It serves as an exceptional background for chatting.
Many color options work well here, but I’ve chosen the default wallpaper-matched color for a cohesive look.
Rosette Nebula
My other favorite wallpaper from the Space folder is the striking image of the Rosette Nebula, featuring warm colors of orange and yellow. This wallpaper becomes particularly engaging when paired with any warm color option from the themes.
I find that color number six works best with this background, providing a vibrant orange shade accented with warm yellow hues.
Yellow/Blue Sunset
Next, there’s a beautiful sunset wallpaper from the Sunsets folder. The combination of a golden sun against a blue sky and white clouds truly stands out.
For this image, I opted for the third color option to create a nice contrast, letting the blue message bubbles pop against the warmer sunset backdrop.
Graphite Grooves
The next theme comes from the Backdrops app, featuring a subtle and sleek Graphite Grooves wallpaper that enhances the overall chat experience without overwhelming it.
The ninth color option pairs nicely with this wallpaper, imparting a refined and clean aesthetic. While it may seem plain to some, I find this combination appealing.
Gradient Hills
Gradient Hills is another outstanding choice from Backdrops, featuring dark blue at the bottom that transitions through purple to a bright orange at the top. This gradient is visually stunning and adds tranquility to my chats.
While I believe a blue theme would work well here, I found the eighth color option, with shades of pink and tan, to be a beautiful fit that many will appreciate.
Stock Pixel
Another excellent wallpaper from the Backdrops library is the Stock Pixel wallpaper, which captures nostalgia with its strong ties to the original Pixel and Pixel XL. This wallpaper not only looks great but also resonates with those who remember the earlier Pixel devices.
While any bluish color option pairs nicely with this wallpaper, I particularly enjoy using the green option (the fourth color), as it contrasts well.
Fall Leaves in Michigan
Utilizing a wallpaper app can significantly enhance your customization options in Google Messages. For these last two themes, I opted for personal photos. For instance, I selected this beautiful image of fall leaves I captured during a nature walk. The stunning colors of Michigan’s trees add a wonderful touch to my chats.
To complement the leaves, I selected the sixth color option, as the rich oranges and yellows blend perfectly with the autumn foliage. I’m thrilled with how this theme turned out.
Florence Duomo
My final theme centers around a stunning photo I took from the top of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence. After climbing the dome, my partner and I were greeted with breathtaking views, and this picture is one of my favorites. It makes for a perfect Google Messages wallpaper.
I opted for the first color option, which integrates seamlessly with the wallpaper, creating a cohesive look.
While customizing chat themes in Google Messages may not be groundbreaking, it offers a simple way to overhaul your conversation aesthetics. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed using these options on my Android device, and if you haven’t yet explored chat themes, I hope this article inspires you to dive in.
