Snap Launches Dotmo: A New AI Video Venture Amid Rising Costs

Snap is set to separate its internal generative AI video division into an independent entity known as Dotmo. This new firm will concentrate on creating AI models designed for interactive gaming experiences, as indicated by Snap.

One major reason for this spinoff is the increasing expenses associated with maintaining such initiatives within Snap itself.

Even though Dotmo will function as a standalone company, it will maintain strong connections with Snap. The parent company will permit Dotmo to utilize its technology in gaming and interactive entertainment. The founding team of Dotmo will primarily consist of current Snap employees who are transitioning to this new venture.

While Dotmo will not receive direct funding from Snap, Bobby Murphy, Snap’s chief technology officer, is set to be the lead investor with a substantial personal investment in the new company. Despite his financial involvement, Murphy will continue his role at Snap full-time, overseeing its generative AI research and development projects.

In return for contributing talent and a technology license, Snap will acquire a significant equity interest in Dotmo, which could yield benefits should the company flourish. There is also the possibility that Dotmo may look for outside funding in the future.

This marks Snap’s second substantial spinoff this year, with the first being the creation of Specs, a new company dedicated to developing smart glasses. Snap’s recent launch of Specs did not meet expectations, leading to a downturn in its stock price due to concerns regarding the product’s high cost of approximately $2,200. Earlier this year, Snap also laid off about 1,000 employees.

Dotmo differs from the Specs spinoff, as its focus will be on crafting digital experiences outside Snap’s main business objectives. Still, Snap representatives noted that Dotmo could become a partner in the future if the collaboration appears beneficial.

Spinoffs can serve as a means for companies to save costs, but they can also fulfill other goals, such as showcasing specific assets, attracting investor interest, or granting the involved team greater operational flexibility. By launching Dotmo, Snap may alleviate some financial pressures associated with its AI projects while retaining the opportunity to benefit from any success through its equity share.
