Patreon Reduces Workforce by 20% in Organizational Restructuring

Patreon has announced a reduction of 20% in its workforce, amounting to 93 employees, as shared by CEO Jack Conte on Thursday. In an internal memo that was later made public, Conte highlighted the resilience of Patreon’s core business while stressing the necessity to adjust to market fluctuations and refine its financial structure, prompting these difficult decisions.

Conte acknowledged the transformative impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the technology sector, noting that the speed of change is unprecedented. He clarified, however, that the layoffs are not motivated by a desire to substitute human labor with AI.

“To clarify how AI influenced this decision: we are not implementing these cuts under the impression that AI can take the place of human workers,” he stated. “Our experience with these new tools confirms that they cannot replace the creativity, judgment, attention to detail, or craftsmanship that our team members possess in abundance, nor can they fulfill the human connections we all value. This reflects my personal belief but is also the cornerstone of Patreon’s strategy: our vision and business model rely on the importance of human creativity and connection.”

He further emphasized that while AI has significantly altered the tech landscape, affecting workflows, product development, and communication, it necessitates changes in how the company functions.

In addition to the layoffs, Conte mentioned that Patreon is reorganizing its internal structure to create a more streamlined organization and concentrate its teams on essential priorities. Those affected by the layoffs will receive a minimum of 16 weeks of severance pay, an additional week for each year of service, continued healthcare coverage until the end of the year, and a stipend of $1,500 to replace their work computers.

Recently, Patreon partnered with Cloudflare to prevent AI bots from accessing creators’ work without their consent. The company stated that this initiative is necessary due to the increasing sophistication of AI scraping methods, responding to concerns from online publishers and creators about their work being misused in AI training.

This round of layoffs marks the largest workforce reduction for Patreon since it cut 17% of its staff in 2022, also resulting in the closure of its offices in Berlin and Dublin at that time.
