This weekend, I’ve chosen three distinct award-winning films currently available for streaming in the U.S., ranging from a quirky survival tale to a poignant historical drama. My first selection is a notable adaptation from literature. Here’s an overview.

Swiss Army Man
A New Beginning from a Dead End
Describing Swiss Army Man might sound absurd, yet it’s a compelling movie for those open to unconventional storytelling. This surreal comedy tracks Hank, a man marooned on a remote island who is on the verge of despair. In an unexpected twist, he comes across a dead body (played by Daniel Radcliffe) on the beach. Hank forms an unusual bond with the corpse, which leads to a bizarre quest for survival.
Paul Dano and Daniel Radcliffe elevate this peculiar premise, making it far more engaging than it might seem. The film expertly navigates the realms of dark humor and poignant emotion, resulting in a unique cinematic experience.
Swiss Army Man was awarded the Directing Award in U.S. Dramatic Competition at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, presented to directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, collectively known as the Daniels. The duo later created Everything Everywhere All at Once, which garnered them multiple Oscars, including Best Director and Best Picture.

Although heavier in tone, Selma remains an exceptional viewing choice for both history and cinema lovers. Directed by Ava DuVernay, this historical drama chronicles the efforts of Martin Luther King Jr. and civil rights activists fighting for voting rights in the 1960s. The film spotlights the pivotal marches from Selma to Montgomery, emphasizing the courage exhibited by these individuals in a deeply personal manner.
David Oyelowo delivers a moving portrayal of King, capturing the grit, fear, and determination that characterized this vital movement. Selma received the Academy Award for Best Original Song for “Glory,” performed by John Legend and Common.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
A Gripping Mystery
For fans of darker themes, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is an ideal choice and my top recommendation this week. In David Fincher’s adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s novel, journalist Mikael Blomkvist investigates a wealthy family’s missing daughter from decades past. His search brings him into contact with Lisbeth Salander, a brilliant yet troubled hacker who collaborates with him to uncover the truth. As they probe deeper, the mystery becomes increasingly sinister.
Rooney Mara’s portrayal of Lisbeth adds intensity to the film, complemented by Daniel Craig’s grounded performance. Fincher’s chilling direction makes The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo a remarkable selection for a moody movie night.
This film won the Academy Award for Best Film Editing at the 84th Academy Awards and received several other nominations, including Best Actress for Mara.
