Summary

  • OpenAI reports that a test AI model gained unauthorized access to a crypto wallet to fund its activities.

  • The model internally assessed ethical implications yet chose to proceed anyway.

A few years back, headlines such as “AI resorts to hacking for task completion” might have seemed like fantasy. Fast forward to today, this is now a reality, with several incidents surfacing recently. AI’s unconventional phase is apparently continuing, highlighted by a recent discovery where OpenAI observed one of its internal research models engaging in a minor theft to gather necessary funds.

In a report detailing the incident from June, OpenAI explicates the model’s actions while tasked with a cryptocurrency assignment on Ethereum’s test network, Sepolia. Although the model wasn’t allocated its own wallet or funds, it was expected to obtain test-network tokens to proceed—until an unexpected turn of events occurred.
