Founders Fund Welcomes Ex-OpenAI Executive Ryan Beiermeister—And It’s Not About Her ‘Mafia’ Expertise

On Monday, Ryan Beiermeister announced her new role as a partner at Founders Fund. She is a recognized figure in Silicon Valley, having previously served as Vice President of Product Policy at OpenAI for nearly two years, a period marked by the explosive rise of ChatGPT, which became the fastest-growing app in history.
Her time at OpenAI came to an unexpected end in February when she was reportedly let go after raising concerns about a controversial feature called “adult mode,” intended to enable the chatbot to engage in adult-themed conversations. Reports indicated that her departure involved an allegation of sexual discrimination from a male colleague, which Beiermeister firmly denied as “absolutely false.” In March, OpenAI ultimately decided to abandon the adult mode feature.
More recently, Beiermeister has gained attention for her performance in a Founders Fund YouTube series titled “Mafia.” The game challenges participants to identify secret Mafia members before they eliminate other players.
In one episode, Beiermeister faced off against notable figures like Sam Altman from OpenAI, Palmer Luckey from Anduril, Dylan Field from Figma, Ryan Petersen from Flexport, and Trae Stephens from Founders Fund, among others.
One memorable moment in Episode One had both Beiermeister and Altman suggesting that if either were found dead, the other would be the prime suspect, prompting laughter among those familiar with their history.
Some online speculated that her participation in the game could have been part of her job interview. However, a spokesperson from Founders Fund clarified that while Beiermeister is indeed a talented Mafia player, her skills were not a component of the hiring process. She has maintained a close relationship with Trae Stephens since their time at Palantir, and her rapport with the team at Founders Fund goes back several years.
Beiermeister’s analytical gameplay, characterized by calm reasoning and astute observations of the game’s dynamics, likely bolstered her candidacy.
Having known Trae Stephens for around a decade, Beiermeister’s prior experience at OpenAI and Meta follows her foundational years at Palantir, which was co-founded by Peter Thiel, the founder of Founders Fund. Both she and Stephens share early career experiences from Palantir.
Expressing her vision for the future, Beiermeister stated that she aims to support startups that align with Founders Fund’s focus.
“The companies that will shape the next two decades are emerging in sectors where product engineering poses the greatest challenges and risks—such as AI infrastructure, agentic systems, defense, energy, climate, biotechnology, and the regulated frontier,” she wrote in a LinkedIn post. “To all founders in these fields, especially those who may not fit the conventional mold: I’m eager to connect, and my inbox is open.”
