Like many online services, AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity can be vulnerable to hacking attempts aimed at user accounts.
A detailed guide has been provided to assist users in safeguarding their accounts against potential breaches. This article outlines how to determine if your accounts on various AI platforms have been compromised.
As a standard practice, it is advisable to use distinct passwords managed by a password manager and to enable multi-factor authentication (MFA). This ensures that even if your password is compromised, unauthorized access remains difficult without the second verification step.
Both ChatGPT and Perplexity support MFA, unlike Claude, which utilizes a different method. Claude sends a login link to your email instead of requiring a password.
All three platforms provide similar features for users to monitor any suspicious login activities. Below are the specific steps for checking active sessions on each platform.
ChatGPT
To check if unauthorized access has occurred on your ChatGPT account, log in via a web browser, click on your username in the lower-left corner, navigate to “Settings,” then “Security and Login,” and finally select “Active Sessions.”
You will be able to view all devices currently logged into your account. If you find any unfamiliar device, you can either log out of that specific device or choose to log out of all sessions.
Should you feel the need to change your password, log out of your account first.
Then, go to the ChatGPT website, click “Log in” at the bottom left, enter your email, select “Forgot password,” and hit “Continue.”
An email with a six-digit reset code will be sent to you. Input this code on the login page, select “Continue,” and set a new password.
Alternatively, you may also use the link to reset your password found in the email for detailed instructions.
Claude
For users on Claude, access it in a web browser, click your username in the lower-left corner, go to “Settings,” and then select “Account.” Here you can view your “Active sessions.”
If you notice any unrecognized sessions, hover over the session entry, click on the three vertical dots on the right, and choose either “Log out” or “Terminate.”
You can also log out of all devices if you prefer.
After that, you’ll need to log back in using your email, receiving an email with a link to access your account. Note that Claude does not utilize traditional passwords, so there is no password to be reset.
Perplexity
Perplexity does not display which devices are currently logged into your account.
If you suspect unauthorized access, go to Perplexity in your browser, click on your username in the lower-left corner, access “All settings,” then select “Sign out of all sessions,” and finally confirm this action.
You can then log back in by entering your email address. An email will be sent to you containing a unique six-digit code, which you can enter on the website to regain access or simply click the “Sign in” button in the email for direct access.
