Amazon has unveiled a new feature for its Alexa assistant that enables users to send text messages to the AI for shopping requests. This feature is currently available to a select group of users in the United States, with broader access expected in the upcoming weeks.
Previously, users could input their grocery lists via the Alexa Shopping app or on Amazon’s website, but the new texting feature is hailed as the most user-friendly approach yet. Users can send a text to place weekly grocery orders, find gifts, or reorder items they are running low on.
Alongside text requests, users can also send photos, prompting Alexa to search for matching products. Alexa will respond with recommendations, then add any selected items to the cart, completing the order on behalf of the user. Over time, the AI aims to refine its suggestions based on individual shopping behaviors and preferences.
Additionally, users can request information about products they are interested in, set alerts for sales, and review pricing histories for up to a year. Text inquiries can also track delivery statuses, with all communications syncing seamlessly with the Amazon Shopping app and website for further research.
To be among the first to try out this feature, users can sign up for an invite. A phone number linkage is required, and if selected, the contact “Alexa Shopping” will appear in their contacts list.
