What Is the Expected Lifespan of a New Apple TV?

While older Apple TVs benefited from extensive updates, Apple hasn’t made any long-term commitments for future support.
The new Apple TV 4K, priced at $299, may seem pricey for a device that simply sits beneath your television. Scheduled to launch on November 13, it boasts an A19 chip, an upgraded Siri Remote, and hands-free Siri functionality. But how long can you realistically expect it to be supported before technology urges you to upgrade?
Though Apple has not specified how many updates its tvOS will receive or how long its devices will be supported, past trends provide insight. Previous models have typically enjoyed major software updates ranging from eight to ten years, with ongoing security fixes afterward. The hardware may still work long after it is no longer officially supported, though issues with software and app compatibility could prompt a replacement.
How Long Does Apple Support an Apple TV?
The Apple TV HD debuted in 2015, followed by the first Apple TV 4K in 2017, both of which were updated to tvOS 26 by 2025. Security patches continued into tvOS 26.6 in July 2026. This suggests nearly a decade of major updates for the HD model and around eight years for the original 4K, along with some security assistance.
This impressive support period ended in September 2026 with the launch of tvOS 27. The updated compatibility list only includes the second-generation Apple TV 4K released in 2021, indicating that earlier models from 2015 and 2017 will no longer be able to access the newest operating system. As of now, it is unclear whether additional security patches will be provided for these older models. Consequently, while it remains to be seen if the new Apple TV 4K will receive ten years of support, Apple has not committed to any specific timeframe for future updates.
Conversely, Amazon guarantees a minimum of four years of security updates for its Fire TV devices purchased directly from the company or based on the model’s published support date, providing customers with a clear timeline for support.
When Should You Consider Replacing Your Apple TV?
Just because your Apple TV can no longer update to the latest version of tvOS doesn’t mean it’s become obsolete. Services like Netflix still work with the Apple TV HD and first-generation Apple TV 4K, even though those devices aren’t eligible for the newest software update. However, this could shift as developers increase their software requirements, potentially rendering older devices unable to run certain apps.
Instead of focusing solely on age, evaluate your Apple TV based on its performance. If menus start lagging, apps begin crashing, or services you rely on no longer function, it may be time for an upgrade. Security is also a concern, particularly if you use your Apple TV as a hub for your smart home and it ceases to receive updates.
Upgrading may feel like a significant expense, especially given the new model’s price tag of $299. However, Apple will also offer its Siri AI capabilities on the second-generation Apple TV 4K and newer models (provided users have an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad), so you might not necessarily need to invest in the latest device just for Siri. The latest Apple TV 4K offers notable enhancements over its predecessor, such as a faster A19 processor and integrated microphones for hands-free control, but whether it’s worth the cost depends on your satisfaction with your current device.
If you misplace or break your Siri Remote, there’s no need to replace the entire system. You can use your iPhone as a remote instead. Apple’s latest Siri Remote works with all Apple TV 4K models and even the 2015 Apple TV HD, with a replacement costing $59.
