OpenAI Considering a Rebranding of Data Centers to ‘AI Compute Campuses’

Data centers are often viewed negatively. However, what if we used a different term?

Reports indicate that OpenAI is planning a major public relations campaign following the upcoming midterm elections, as Democrats appear poised to regain control of the House of Representatives and potentially the Senate.

Chris Lehane, the company’s chief global affairs officer, mentioned that the midterm elections could serve as a preview for the presidential election in 2028, during which he anticipates artificial intelligence will be a predominant topic.

OpenAI aims to shape the upcoming discussions around AI, with Lehane proposing several initiatives. These include establishing AI “speed limits,” fostering a more positive perception of AI’s role in everyday life, advocating for the United States to lead in creating global standards, and even rebranding data centers as “AI compute campuses.”

Lehane also referred to the growing dialogue surrounding data centers as “good and healthy,” noting that it has prompted companies like Amazon and Microsoft to move away from using non-disclosure agreements in their talks with local authorities.

He emphasized the importance of communities holding companies accountable to ensure they derive substantial benefits from these initiatives.
