Comcast Introduces Motion Sensing in Millions of New Routers—but at a Privacy Cost

Comcast has introduced innovative motion-sensing technology in its latest home routers, enabling homeowners to get alerts about detected activity in their homes while they are not there.
The complimentary feature, dubbed Wi-Fi Motion, transforms modern Xfinity gateways into motion detectors by recognizing interruptions in the wireless network’s signal and sending notifications through the Xfinity app.
According to recent reports, the Wi-Fi Motion feature is compatible with the advanced XB7 Xfinity gateways and subsequent models. It is also opt-in, allowing users to decide whether to enable it via the Xfinity app. Customers may utilize this function for alerting them about movement within their residence and for basic security purposes.
However, there is a potential privacy concern. When opting into this feature, Comcast indicates that it may share information generated from the use of Wi-Fi Motion with external parties for various reasons, without requiring notice to the user.
An Xfinity support document states: “Comcast may disclose information generated by your Wi-Fi Motion to third parties without further notice to you in connection with any law enforcement investigation or proceeding, any dispute to which Comcast is a party, or pursuant to a court order or subpoena.”
This is an important consideration for users who prioritize their privacy when deciding whether to enable the feature.
