Stripe Poised to Acquire AI Gateway Innovator OpenRouter in a Deal Exceeding $7 Billion

Stripe has reportedly reached an agreement to acquire OpenRouter, as detailed in a recent Bloomberg report.

OpenRouter provides a platform that enables users to choose from various AI models tailored to meet their unique requirements and financial constraints. In May, the company disclosed it had secured $113 million in Series B funding, with a valuation estimated at $1.3 billion. Notable investors include Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures, and Capital G from Alphabet.

OpenRouter’s CEO, Alex Atallah, likened the company to Stripe for the AI sector, emphasizing its role as a central access point to a variety of AI systems, helping to avoid vendor lock-in. According to the startup, it serves 8 million users worldwide and grants access to over 400 different models.

Last month, The Wall Street Journal indicated that Stripe and OpenRouter were in negotiations for an acquisition. Bloomberg has now reported that these talks have culminated in a deal valued at more than $7 billion.

A spokesperson for Stripe indicated that the company refrains from commenting on speculation or unconfirmed rumors.
