4 Frustrating Google Messages Settings I Can’t Stand Changing

Google Messages has become a leading messaging application for Android users, particularly after the discontinuation of the Samsung Messages app, leading to a surge in new users opting for Google’s service. While the app boasts many beneficial features, there are several default configurations that many users, including myself, prefer to modify for an improved experience.

This article will guide you through some essential adjustments, such as altering swipe gestures, customizing smart replies, and disabling unnecessary animations.

Modify Swipe Gestures for Enhanced Functionality

Simplify Chat Management

Google Messages offers various functions to make navigation and chat management easier, but it falls short in the swipe gesture department. Currently, both left and right swipe gestures are set to archive conversations, which can be counterintuitive.

To enhance usability, you can change these gestures. Start by opening Google Messages, tapping your profile icon in the upper right corner, and navigating to Message settings. From there, scroll down to Swipe Actions, where you can customize the actions for both left and right swipes, allowing one to delete messages and the other to archive or mark them as read. If accidental swipes are a recurring issue, you can also disable these gestures entirely.

Disable Distracting Animations

Eliminate Unwanted Emoji Effects

In recent updates, Google introduced flashy full-screen “expressive animations” for messages, which evoke mixed reactions from users. The addition of vibrant emoji reactions has further amplified this issue, leading to overwhelming visuals when someone replies with an emoji.

If these animations are more irritating than entertaining for you, simply head back to the Google Messages settings and turn off the Expressive animations option. This is just one among many features that can be adjusted to suit your preferences.

Customize Smart Replies

Edit Suggestions Before Sending

Google Messages provides handy Smart Reply options below incoming messages, making it quicker to respond. However, many find the default replies lackluster or inappropriate.

An update introduced a “Tap to edit” feature that allows users to modify these replies before sending them, thus reducing the risk of accidental messages. To activate this, go to your profile icon, navigate to Message Settings > Suggestions and Actions > Suggestions, and select the Tap to edit option. This way, you can craft responses that better match your style.

Turn Off Notifications and Unnecessary Sounds

Reduce Noise from Messages

One more setting that many users may find beneficial is disabling message notification sounds. Hearing sounds every time a message is sent can be disruptive, especially with the barrage of notifications most people experience regularly.

To silence these sounds, go to the main Messages settings and toggle off the option labeled Hear outgoing and incoming message sounds. Additionally, consider disabling Nudges under Suggestions and Actions. Nudges are prompts that remind you of messages that may need replies, but they can be more distracting than helpful, depending on individual preferences.

Explore More Features

The aforementioned adjustments are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to customizing Google Messages. Whether you’re transitioning from another messaging app or are a current user, there are numerous additional features to explore. You can auto-delete OTP messages, pin crucial conversations, personalize wallpapers, and provide parental controls for sensitive content.

Take some time to explore the settings menu; you might be surprised by the array of customization options available.
