Discovering Talent: Lightspeed’s Unique Recruitment Journey Through Instagram DMs

Earlier this year, Lightspeed gained attention when it revealed that Claire Zau, an influential investor and tech content creator, would be joining the venture capital firm. Zau boasts over 100,000 followers on TikTok and more than 250,000 on Instagram, where she explores significant tech trends.
Zau and Lightspeed partner Josh Machiz visited the Equity studio to discuss their strategy for enhancing their social media outreach, their podcast titled Lightwork, and how it all began with an Instagram direct message.
“Many people are eager to engage with the future and are enthusiastic about technology,” Zau stated in her talk with Equity. “However, they often lack access to information presented in an easy-to-understand manner. I feel honored to fill that role.”
Zau represents a new generation of venture operators leveraging social media to engage with a wider audience, from tech enthusiasts to potential future founders who may seek funding from Lightspeed.
The podcast she co-hosts with Machiz, Lightspeed’s Chief Marketing Officer, is part of a growing trend among venture firms, aiming to help portfolio companies communicate their stories more effectively.
“Traditional journalism is diminishing due to layoffs and media consolidation,” Machiz explained. “Startups face increasing challenges in sharing their narratives. Opportunities to get their funding stories out are becoming scarcer. We aim to provide a platform for these stories in the evolving media landscape.”
So far, both the duo and the firm have noted the advantages of broadening the Lightspeed media presence. Engaging with emerging founders is a primary benefit, and their online activity also enables them to gather immediate feedback on investments and technological innovations. For instance, Zau mentioned that while Silicon Valley buzzed about a new AI startup, her discussions online revealed that Gen Z appears to be largely skeptical of AI.
“It was quite humbling,” she reflected on the direct responses to her videos. “Real-time insights into how people are interacting with these technologies and which narratives resonate are invaluable.”
Machiz and Zau also shared their visions for the future during their Equity chat. Perhaps another podcast? A TV series in the future? “Our goal is to create a platform where aspiring founders can learn about venture capital and the ecosystem as a whole,” Machiz stated. “We’re only just beginning.”
Tune in to explore more from their discussion and discover what upcoming projects Machiz and Zau have in store.
