Discovering Insights: My Journey Creating a Household Management App with Claude

Mitja Rutnik / Android Authority

A few months ago, I set out to enhance how I managed my household tasks. While I was already proficient with routine chores, I was seeking a more effective approach to organize our family calendar, set goals, and keep track of household items. Customization was essential to cater to my family dynamics, pets, and the specific layout of my home.

I explored various household management applications that nearly met my expectations, but nothing was precisely right. This led me to wonder if I could develop my solution. With many individuals already leveraging AI tools for programming learning and basic coding, I jumped in using Claude to see what I could accomplish, the obstacles I might face, and if it could truly address my needs.

I took a straightforward approach by beginning with a progressive web app. In the sections ahead, I’ll detail how I developed it, what unique features it offers compared to other solutions, and its limitations.

Have you ever utilized Claude or another AI for app customization?

Reasons Behind Not Choosing Existing Household Apps

You might wonder why I didn’t opt for one of the many chore or household management apps that I tested. I got pretty close on a few occasions. I tried apps like Cozi Family Organizer, OurHome, and Sweepy, looking for the ideal setup, but I always found something lacking in each.

Sweepy offers a customizable list for chores, allowing the addition of unique tasks and rooms; however, it lacks a household inventory feature. Cozi is a bit better with its shopping list feature, but it primarily allows for manual task addition. My goal was an already populated list of common household items that I could easily adjust. Another obstacle was that some of the more appealing features required a subscription.

I came to realize that most of what I desired existed across different apps but never in one cohesive package. So, I embarked on creating my own app by merging my favorite functionalities. Months later, I use my customized app almost daily. I’ve made numerous upgrades since then, and I view it as an ongoing project. I appreciate the flexibility it offers, allowing me to implement new features whenever I want without waiting for a developer’s input.

My Journey in Building a Household Management App

Initially, I aimed to transform my concept into a formal Android app using Claude Code. I began by drafting a Google Sheet outlining the core features I envisioned, acting as my reference guide. However, I quickly sensed that this would be a lengthy endeavor.

Claude’s abilities lie in assisting coding rather than directly generating an Android app. Essential tools like Android Studio are necessary, and the method involved considerable manual input. This didn’t deter me; I produced a rudimentary working version eventually.

While a progressive web app may have its limitations compared to a full Android app, Claude simplifies the construction process.

However, after investing substantial time into building it, just a few minutes of testing revealed numerous missing features, and I realized it would take an inordinate amount of time to develop further. I thus switched my focus to creating a web app with Claude, allowing for quicker iterations of new ideas.

This new approach proved to be user-friendly; minimal additional tools were required, and it mostly involved straightforward coding interactions.

The primary drawback was its somewhat clunky experience, necessitating direct browser access. This prompted me to develop it into a progressive web app, involving Claude generating additional files like manifest.json and service-worker.js for offline caching functionality.

With a functional prototype in hand, the next step was to host it as Chrome wouldn’t recognize local files as PWAs. Hosting options comprise local servers or online platforms like GitHub. I chose the latter for its user-friendly installation process.

Challenges of Custom Apps

My initial web app version lacked numerous features but was noticeably superior to earlier attempts with a formal Android app. With continued efforts, I honed it closer to my vision. However, some features were more challenging to incorporate than others, which pushed me to learn new skills, tools, and refine my creative thinking.

For instance, syncing proved elusive. Implementing a manual file import/export system was an easy workaround but limited cross-device functionality. My first solution involved using an old tablet as a family hub attached to the fridge.

Within a month, my app successfully monitored family expenses, inventory, and cleaning schedules, complete with tabs for individual family members’ chores. I even managed to integrate Google Calendar and began experimenting with Firebase for better syncing capabilities.

The constraints of Claude’s PWA generation can be mitigated with various workarounds.

Working with Claude offered valuable insights into application development. Although initially simple, overcoming the inherent limitations deepened my coding knowledge and familiarity with essential tools.

However, there’s a limit to how far this method can take you. Frequent revisions can exhaust your usage limits more quickly than creating a genuine app via Claude Code, even though this method is generally easier. It’s also vital to select the appropriate model; for my work, it was Opus, which changed over time. Even pushing PWAs has inherent restrictions, often resulting in a design that feels less polished than a native app.

While some adjustments can enhance aesthetics, true coding remains necessary for more professional production. Moreover, without significant alterations, these apps cannot be published officially without additional layers, like wrapping the web app using tools like Capacitor or Cordova.

The Merits of PWAs Despite the Superiority of Native Android Apps

After spending several months refining my PWA, I now feel prepared to undertake a full overhaul. I’m utilizing Claude Code, Android Studio, and additional tools to develop a genuine app with web-syncing capabilities and expanded functionalities. It’s still a work in progress, but even in its testing phase, it surpasses the original significantly.

Some may argue I should have jumped straight into developing an Android app, but I believe the foundational experience has been invaluable. Now, with my tenth PWA build and a rough draft of the native app ready, this rapid prototyping journey would have been more challenging had I started conventionally. While the current app isn’t the most polished, it performs its intended functions and has turned into an enjoyable side project.

Creating PWAs has increased my confidence in coding and development resources, making this a rewarding learning experience. Though a native Android app might always deliver superior functionality, the lesson here is that if you have a unique problem and don’t know where to start, using Claude to develop a PWA is an excellent foothold. You’ll gain invaluable knowledge and perhaps discover a passion for deeper exploration, which mirrors my own journey.
