Google to Introduce Temporary 3-Hour Pause for Android Advanced Protection

In Summary
- Google is reportedly developing an option to temporarily disable Android’s Advanced Protection mode.
- This feature will allow users to pause the protection for a duration of three hours.
- The change aims to simplify tasks like sideloading applications while ensuring users don’t forget to reactivate the protection.
Google has been enhancing the security features of Android continuously throughout the past year. Recent findings in Google Play Services (version 26.30.31) indicate that the company might be introducing a much-anticipated improvement to the Advanced Protection Mode.

The Advanced Protection feature is aimed at individuals who are more vulnerable to targeted attacks. Rather than providing users with a flexible choice of security settings, it consolidates multiple protective measures into one toggle. The downside is that certain Android functionalities become restricted in exchange for heightened security.
One limitation involved with this mode is the inability to sideload applications. If you wish to install an app from outside the Play Store, you are required to turn off Advanced Protection, finish the installation, and then remember to activate it again. Recent analysis has revealed that Google is working on a more convenient approach for these situations.
Introducing the Pause Feature

We have successfully activated an unreleased iteration of the feature that allows users to temporarily pause Advanced Protection instead of fully disabling it.
When users attempt to turn off the feature, a dialog will appear stating:
“While paused, device protection features will be turned off. They will automatically turn back on after 3 hours.”
This functionality allows users to pause Advanced Protection temporarily for tasks that need it turned off. After three hours, Android will automatically restore the protective features.
In contrast to Google Play Protect, which permits users to pause app scanning until the following day, the Advanced Protection feature will activate again much sooner, minimizing the risk of users forgetting to re-enable protection and leaving their devices vulnerable.
While sideloading is the primary scenario for this feature, there are various other applications such as troubleshooting issues, using enterprise applications incompatible with Advanced Protection, testing software, opening specific links, or completing other tasks that require temporary suspension of certain protections.
Preparing for New Sideloading Regulations?
The anticipated launch of this feature is particularly timely.
Google has recently announced that a new developer verification system will begin implementing user-facing protections starting September 30, 2026, and will expand globally into 2027.
As part of this initiative, Android will roll out a more stringent installation process for apps from unverified developers. While sideloading won’t be eliminated, installing applications from unknown or unverified sources will entail added security checks and prompts.
Given these forthcoming adjustments, it appears Google is also refining the Advanced Protection feature to facilitate smoother experiences as these new regulations come into effect.
⚠️ An APK teardown can shed light on features that may be included in future updates based on ongoing development code. However, there is no guarantee that all identified features will reach a public release.
