Mercedes Unveils Its Debut Electric GLA Boasting an Impressive 408-Mile Range

Mercedes-Benz is set to unveil an electric version of one of its best-selling vehicles. The company has revamped the GLA for 2027, introducing a fully electric model along with hybrid variants.

This updated compact SUV features a more robust design and additional interior space, incorporating elements from recent models like the C-Class. A key highlight is its advanced battery technology and 800V architecture, which enables a claimed range of 408 miles under the WLTP testing conditions. The vehicle also supports rapid charging, allowing for up to 168 miles of travel after just 10 minutes of charging. While U.S. EPA estimates may be more conservative, the GLA is expected to offer commendable range.

The hybrid version will utilize 48-volt technology, enabling it to operate solely on electric power at lower speeds with its 1.3kWh battery. It can also glide on electric energy at speeds exceeding 62 mph and recharge while in any gear.

Intelligent Features and Off-Road Capability

An Electric Vehicle Prepared for Adventure

The 2027 GLA is equipped with the latest iteration of Mercedes’ MBUX infotainment system. It features a Virtual Assistant for natural AI voice control and Surround Navigation that provides a 3D route visualization. European versions will offer semi-autonomous driving features, including an upgraded parking function that enables the car to exit parking spaces autonomously.

Among the available options is the brand’s signature Superscreen, which combines a 10.3-inch instrument cluster with 14-inch displays for the infotainment system and front passenger. Buyers can also opt for a premium 16-speaker Burmester sound system with spatial audio, while a panoramic glass roof is standard.

Additionally, the new GLA is designed for light off-road use, boasting a towing capacity of up to 4,400 lbs for electric versions. A Terrain mode enhances driving dynamics on unpaved surfaces. A unique “transparent” hood feature allows drivers to see the ground below when navigating rocky or challenging terrains.

Pricing and Availability of the 2027 Mercedes GLA

Initial Focus on Electric Models

Pre-orders for the 2027 GLA will commence in Germany on July 30, with the electric models available first.

The base model, GLA 200, will feature a 200kW motor and a 58kWh battery, starting at a competitive price of €40,840 (approximately $46,820) before tax. A more powerful GLA 250+ will begin at €46,200 (around $52,935), while the premium GLA 350 4MATIC starts at €48,830 ($55,928), offering all-wheel drive and the ability to reach 62 mph in just 5.4 seconds.

Details on pricing for hybrid versions have yet to be disclosed.

Waiting for U.S. Availability

Currently, there is no information regarding the pricing for the U.S. market. However, it is anticipated that the electric model will be significantly more expensive than the 2026 gasoline variant, which starts at $41,500. Despite this, it may still represent a better value compared to existing electric SUVs such as the EQB.

Enthusiasts will need to be patient, as the 2027 GLA is not expected to arrive in American dealerships until the latter half of 2027, when it will be released as a 2028 model.
