Warner Bros. Sues Amazon, Alleging Unlawful Executive Poaching

This week, Warner Bros. Discovery initiated legal action against Amazon, alleging interference with contractual obligations, breach of contract, and unfair competitive practices.

According to reports, the lawsuit claims that Amazon has been swiftly attempting to lure away a number of contracted employees, including Pia Barlow, a marketing executive from HBO Max who recently took a position with Amazon MGM Studios. Warner Bros. indicated that Barlow’s contract was not set to expire until October 31, 2027.

Warner Bros. accused Amazon of flouting California laws by trying to persuade its employees to violate their contracts without consequences, claiming that Amazon offers assurances to defend and indemnify them against potential legal repercussions for their actions.

The company also brought up allegations that Amazon attempted to induce another Warner Bros. employee to break their contract, which was due to remain valid until December 2027. However, this particular executive, believed to be programming executive Francesca Orsi from HBO, ultimately chose to remain with Warner Bros.

This lawsuit may reignite discussions regarding the enforceability of term employment contracts in California.

Amazon MGM Studios has refrained from making any comments on the matter.
