Waymo Consideres Splitting from Uber, Sources Suggest

Waymo is reportedly seeking to exit its partnership with Uber, which has facilitated the integration of its robotaxis into Uber’s platform in cities like Austin and Atlanta, as noted by the Financial Times.
Waymo has informed Uber of its plans to launch its own robotaxi service through its app in these locations, starting January 2028. Uber confirmed that the existing agreement covering these markets will conclude in May 2028. Earlier this year, the two companies already parted ways in Phoenix, as first mentioned by TechCrunch.
Waymo has not yet responded to requests for comment.
This development comes after a series of escalating tensions between Waymo and Uber. Earlier in the year, Uber’s Chief Technology Officer Praveen Neppalli shared a video highlighting what he deemed unsafe behavior exhibited by a Waymo robotaxi. In May, Uber’s CEO Dara Khosrowshahi subtly criticized the operational conduct of Waymo’s vehicles in sensitive environments like school zones and emergency situations during a financial earnings call, without directly naming Waymo.
On another front, Waymo has found itself at odds with Uber in several recent discussions concerning robotaxi regulations.
